Some nice programs here I have found that DarkWave Studio is fairly good for music, although it wont generate it for you, its possible to manipulate the sound so you can make effects for games too. Overall I have found my current programs are Photoshop CS4, DarkWave and maybe FruityLoops in the future.

Could try putting LMMS - Linux MultiMedia Studio in there...
    http://lmms.info/

I know it says Linux right in the name, but they provide Windows binaries for it.

They designed it to be a free alternative to FL Studio though I haven't tried it myself.

Anyway, a link I would suggest to look at for ideas of alternative free software would be www.osalt.com. the site allows you to search for commercial software and provides free alternative software suggestions where known.

But most important note with this site is that it provides Windows, Linux and Mac software alternatives and provides information as to what operating system the software supports. So make sure it's compatible with your OS.

    Hope this helps.

I know one, not sure if it is free mind you but Band in a Box is the one for you, you select the style of melody harmony etc press create and listen, not happy create again, you can even write the chord sequence an have it do the rest for you allowing a theme to go through all your game.

    From the site
Band-in-a-Box is a powerful and creative music composition tool for exploring and developing musical ideas with near-instantaneous feedback. Over the years many features have been added to Band-in-a-Box - Notation, Piano Roll, Lyrics, Melody Tracks, Harmonization, the StyleMaker, and StylePicker. The Soloist and the Melodist are popular "intelligent" features; the Soloist generates professional quality solos over any chord progression, the Melodist can create songs from scratch with Chords, Melodies, Intros, Solos, and even a Title!

Just come across a site which seem to have a fair bit of information including tips and tricks and other things such as resource sites.

    The link is as follows:

    Hope people find this useful.
