Hey all,
Most of you don't know me, but I feel like a soldier returning home to share my adventures over the last year with you.
I'm Andrew Martin aka XT Warhorse/SplaTTerJAK/One Crazy Knight!, Far Cry 2 champion, Far Cry 3 Ps3 Tester(thanks to VMC labs) and author of One Crazy Knight! Our first indie game!
Do you want to know what the single most important bit of advice given to me outside of this course is? go make a game.
It does not matter which role within a studio you want, you will be in a much stronger position if you understand every role. If thats not your style then there are hundreds of people on this forum and the web in general that want the work experience and could do those bits.
I almost bought a game maker license, but went with Construct2 as it was easier for a novice to understand, both have a free license, both great products, but im not here to discuss their merits, that is a topic all of its own.
I'm on the QA course and not once has unity been mentioned, this is what the majority of mobile studios use, so it is worth checking out if you want to be taken seriously.
I have taken the hardest route into the industry, but for some like me the only route into the industry because I don't have a qualification yet....
I don't want to fill people's heads with the wrong idea, as I have yet to make any money, but I have spent the last few months managing this expectation and finally feel that it will happen in the forthcoming weeks/months as we have a pc only web version of the game.
Some say it is an ageing format and I am inclined to agree so try to make anything you make mobile ready if you want decent money(its what the publishers/sponsors want). Depending upon your engine/software this means adjusting the screen size for different platforms and limiting the number of processes such as objects with physics processes as it could be running on a phone.
At the moment developers are kept working because the internet is undergoing an evolution to become mobile friendly as more and more people are accessing it on the go. Html5 is perfectly positioned for this as it runs in any browser(chrome is best(jan2014)) and does not require you to download any additional plugins, etc.
Commit yourself to the endeavour of developing your own game.
Then commit yourself to bringing it to market, thats the hard part and I thought it would be the easiest because I have a business background. You have to bring the money in or its still just a dream. I highly recommend selling direct with your own site and chrome store and not to rely solely on adverts to generate revenue because even 100,000 hit on Kongregate only earns $1500 or so.
Check out Clay.io and BoostMedia as they can help a lot with advertising.
lastly, learn about api's
what they are and how they can make you money.
OK, enough blabber.
I present to you, the free version of our first game "One Crazy Knight!"
