Default The Green Box Games development thread

    Hey all,

whilst our art team are on a short hiatus, and we continue to search for a coder http://forum.train2game.com/showthre...rammer-wanted)
I thought it would be a nice idea to start a development thread for our current project.

I know a lot of student teams like to keep their ideas and projects a closely guarded secret, so I thought I'd break that tradition and keep an open development thread for you all gaze at, in awe, at your leisure

It's intended for new/newer students to view, gain insight and hopefully learn a little, as we also continue to learn how to successfully develop a video game. Hopefully other student teams can see how we've done things, compare and contrast their experiences on their development cycle/stages.

We'll be posting all experiences, good and bad, mistakes made and any problems and issues we encounter along the way. As well as some screen shots of the project, some exclusive to just this thread. (you lucky lot)

And, as always, feedback, questions and comments are welcome

So we currently have our player character able to move in all eight directions (we're using an angled birds-eye-view style camera angle). His animations for the four directions (up, down, left and right) have been implemented. We intend to use the 'up' animation for north-west and north-east movements and the 'down' animation for the south-east and south-west movements but we're struggling to implement this and we're hoping any potential programmer can iron out this crease.

We also have our sword combat mechanic implemented along with the animations, in all four directions, to go along with it.

So far we've been using the engines (Construct2) built in event/condition feature to get to this stage, and without any coding.

    Screen shots:

Enemies can now be killed/defeated. We did this using the engines "spawn another object" feature. We spawn a transparent box on completion of the sword swing, and when this collides with said enemy, we use the "destroy" condition so the engine knows to to kill him/it.

We also have our projectile mechanic implemented, but sadly, only in one direction so far (down). We did this in a similar way to the sword combat mechanic, but instead, spawning a projectile, and then an explosion on contact with the games enemies.

We recently added a feature, to allow our player character to traverse through different areas of the games map. Using the engines " on overlapping another object" feature we then instruct the player character to "go to another layout" . We then had to set the new positions of the player character, in the new area/scene using X and Y coordinates. This was a massive pain in the arse and took a lot of play testing to get right (I still think it needs tweaking)

Here's an over view of the desert labyrinth. The layout/framework of all nine rooms is now finished. The player character can go from room to room. Obviously this area/level is far from finished but here it is in progress....

We now have an entrance to the desert labyrinth. We also have doors inside, and the ability to open shut/locked doors (with the flick of a hidden switch ).
