The following qualifications are being offered to students in addition to the TIGA Diploma. Students may take either City & Guilds or TIGA, or if they particularly wish to do so, they can choose to take both:
Level 6 Diploma in Game Design for Computer Gaming (Industry Specific)
Level 7 Diploma in Art and Animation for Computer Gaming (Industry Specific)
Level 7 Diploma in Game Development for Computer Gaming (Industry Specific)
So that you are able to have an understanding of these levels we have copied below the levelling equivalent as issued by City & Guilds:
Level 6 Honours degree/Graduate* For senior managers.
Level 7 Postgraduate level.
a) The QA course is NOT included.
b) The City & Guilds Designer qualification is equivalent to Degree level. The Art and Animation and Developer qualifications are equivalent to Masters level. So, how does this sit with the benchmarking? All three courses are benchmarked as equivalent to the first two years of university, the benchmarking relates to how the course itself compares to a course at university; it does not look at the qualification but the course itself. We have to bear in mind that university courses have a lot of bums on seat time, labs and other face to face time, open learning courses do not have as much face to face time. During a university benchmarking the courses are compared as if like for like, one of the criteria is therefore face to face time, for this reason the benchmarking will record lower for courses which do not include as much face to face time. However, the actual qualification, as proven by City & Guilds levelling, may be the same as a university degree, or indeed above.
c) PORTFOLIOS – the portfolio required for the City & Guilds qualification is DIFFERENT to the portfolio required for the TIGA qualification. Therefore, if a student chooses to undertake both qualifications they would need to produce two portfolios.
d) The portfolios which students are asked to produce as part of their course work is separate to the portfolios for either the City & Guilds qualification and the TIGA qualification.
e) Students should try to decide which qualification they wish to undertake at the beginning of Section 3 of the course material, however, we will accept decisions at any point during Section 3. To make a choice the student should simply contact their Tutor Team, either for a discussion, or to state which qualification/s they wish to work towards. However, we are flexible as to point at which the student makes this decision.
